The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has started issuing the Muqeem Card or the
Resident identity card from 14th Oct 2015 (1437 Hijri – the start of
the Islamic year), to replace the Iqama number. So from this date, no more
Iqamas will be issued. In Riyadh, Muqeem cards have already been given out and
the process initiated by the crown prince Mohammed Bin Naif, the Deputy Premier
and the Ministry Of Interior (MOI). ‘Iqama is not going to be used for any
employee henceforth. The passport department of the country has issued notice
stating that the new Muqeem cards will be sent out using Saudi post to all
individuals and companies with the entire process being conducted online. There
was no need for any expatriate or citizen to visit the offices in connection
with Muqeem Card.
Important details of Muqeem cards
§ Personal details like
Photo, Name, Date of Birth, Occupation, Nationality, Work eligibility,
Religion, Employer name and Work Permit Number will be mentioned on the card
§ Although the validity of
Muqeem card is 5 years, there is no expiry date on the Muqeem card. However,
you need to renew Muqeem Card once every year through Muqeem online service or
abshir service. Which is the same as was done for Iqama, just that the name
Iqama is not used
§ If the expatriate leaves
the country on a re-entry visa and fails to come back, then a 3 year ban will
be imposed. However he/she will be able to enter after the ban period
§ Since the Muqeem cards are
equivalent to ID cards, they can used for various purposes like toll gates,
check points, banks, companies and hotels. The Muqeem card acts as a one stop
solution for all points where your identity needs to be verified.
